I think this is an amazing idea, I am sure the concept has been around for a long time, but this is the first time I have stumbled across glass bottle hot beds for growing fruit and vegetables. Basically sunlight heats the bottles and when this happens the warm air inside expands, and the only way out is through the soil and this in turn raises the temperature of the soil in the bed. This enables you to grow plants that might normally struggle in your climate, or speed up and extend the growing season of normal plants.
The hot bed in the photo is pretty small, but given enough wine or beer bottles you could make much larger hot beds. I am not saying you need to drink all the beer and wine for the beds though! If you ask friends and family to collect their bottles you’ll soon have lots of bottles to recycle. Alternatively head down to your nearest glass recycling depot and see if you can pick up a load of bottles in one go. Check out the link below to see how to build your own DIY glass bottle hot bed.
