The title of the post pretty much says it all!

Shop brought laundry soap is expensive and it’s full of industrial strength chemicals which can be bad for you and the environment, so why not save some money and make your own?

In one shopping trip you can pick up all the ingredients to make enough laundry soap to last a year (based on a family of four). It will cost you around $30 and a bit of time to mix it up and store it for use.  Then it’s job done for the next twelve months.

If you want to give it a go, head over to One Good Thing By Jille, get the recipe and follow her tutorial (complete with photos).

I have VERY sensitive skin…have to use “free” laundry soap….worry this would still be too harsh for my skin.

I’ve been making my own laundry detergent for over a year. I make it using just 3 ingredients. …it’s WAY cheaper then this, and JUST as good. I also use white vinegar for fabric softener. I work as a Medical Assistant…my whites are WHITE..my brights are BRIGHT..with just the 3 basic ingredients. The ‘fabric softener’ works like a charm…I’ve used both on my newborn grandson’s cloths with NO PROBLEMS…my d-i-l also is has several allergies and she has no issues with this AT ALL…you can use ZOTE soap instead of Fels Naptha…but the Fels IS gentle. Not sure about how you’d react with Jille’s recipe howver

can you use dial soap in place of fels soap?

I have made the soap using Ivory in place of Fels Neptha. It worked just fine. To be totally honest, I am currently using just plain old baking soda and nothing else. My laundry is fine. If there is a stain, I do use Dr. Bronner’s unscented soap on it before tossing it into the wash. But all in all the baking soda works wonderfully. I use about a hand full each time, but I have very hard water.

Is it color safe? It seems like the borax would bleach you clothes.
