If you don’t know what a fire piston is – a fire piston, or a “slam rod fire starter” as it’s sometimes known, is a small tube/piston that uses rapid compression of air to create heat. When the compression is high enough, the heat generated in the air chamber ignites the tinder material, which is then used to start the fire.
We featured a tutorial on how to make a fire piston ages back, but lots of folks pointed out that you needed some expensive DIY tools to complete the project… This is not the case with this fire-piston tutorial! You can pick up the bits required from your local DIY store for less than $5 and there are not specialized tools required. If you don’t have a grinder, you could simple use a metal file! Check out the tutorial below to see how to build this awesome pocket sized fire piston.
